This sample demonstrates how you can use an animated image to show that the map is loading. In this sample, the image is a small animated GIF. The image appears when the map first loads and also when the user zooms or pans. The image goes away when all the layers have loaded.
This sample is driven by events. The map's onUpdateStart event fires when a layer begins updating its content, so we display the "loading" icon when this event fires. The map's onUpdateEnd event fires when the layers have finished updating content so we use this event to hide the icon.
The image path is referenced in the HTML body. You can use the namespace methods esri.show and esri.hide to toggle the visibility of the image.
